We are an online travel agency whose platform allows you to compare and book vehicles from various rental companies in over 160 countries and territories worldwide, according to your preferences and needs.
We act as an intermediary in booking vehicle rentals offered by rental companies through our platform.
We are not the final provider of this service and, therefore, are not directly or indirectly responsible for any failures in the services provided by the rental companies or for any damages caused by them. However, we have a highly trained team available to assist you in case of any issues. We are here to help!
By completing a booking with us, you automatically accept these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"), as well as our Privacy Policy, which constitutes an agreement between you, our customer (also referred to as the renter), and us.
Since we act solely as intermediaries in the commercialization of rental services offered by rental companies, we provide some information to guide you regarding the rules and obligations usually required by our partner rental companies. However, you must also review and comply with the Terms & Conditions established by each rental company, as well as the laws and regulations of the country where you are booking your rental. We will make every effort to provide this information to you.
There may be specific restrictions and/or additional terms that are not covered in the examples listed here. Therefore, always review the specific conditions of each service and rental company before confirming your booking.
As mere intermediaries in this relationship, we do not have any influence over the specific conditions set by each rental company. However, whenever possible, we will act on your behalf and assist you in any way we can.
As we are constantly improving our platform, we frequently update our Terms, whether to restrict services or to add new security measures for your adherence, without prior notice. Therefore, we recommend that you visit our page (https://www.rentcars.com/en/info/terms-and-conditions) whenever possible to stay updated on our latest updates.
We also reserve the right to suspend our system for repairs, security updates, or maintenance. However, rest assured: any bookings you have already completed through our system will be honored.
If you have any questions or need assistance, check our FAQ to see if we have already addressed your concern, or contact us through our Customer Support Center (https://help.rentcars.com).
1. VOUCHER (BOOKING CONFIRMATION DOCUMENT)1.1 The Voucher (Booking Confirmation Document) serves as confirmation of your booking with us and the rental company. It is individual and non-transferable and must be issued in the name of the person who will actually use the vehicle: the renter. It is not possible to change the booking holder after the booking has been issued and confirmed. Once your booking is confirmed through our service channels, we will send the Voucher to your registered email along with these Terms & Conditions.
1.2 The Voucher must be printed and presented to the rental company when picking up the vehicle. It will only be valid if all the information contained in it (such as the holder's name, confirmation number, dates, times, pick-up and drop-off locations, among other details) is correct at the time of vehicle pick-up at the rental counter.
1.2.1 Failure to present the Voucher or any discrepancies between the information on the Voucher and the details provided at the time of vehicle pick-up may prevent the use of the booking and, consequently, make vehicle rental impossible. This situation is referred to as Turn-down and may be subject to applicable fees and charges (as explained in item 10 of these Terms).
2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VEHICLE RENTAL2.1 Rental companies establish certain rules for vehicle pick-up and usage. Any additional drivers included in the booking will be subject to the same rules. Below, we list some requirements applicable to rentals made both within Brazil and abroad, as well as some restrictions imposed by rental companies. This list is not exhaustive and may vary depending on the rental company and the country where the vehicle is picked up. Therefore, please pay attention to the specific conditions of your booking and your chosen destination.
2.2 It is your sole responsibility to enter your information correctly, review it carefully, and comply with all the requirements listed below to avoid a possible refusal by the rental company when opening your rental agreement.
2.3 Requirements for Vehicle Rental Within Brazil
2.3.1 Minimum Age for Renters and/or Additional Drivers: The general rule is 21 years old, but some rental companies may require a higher minimum age. We recommend checking the specific policy of the chosen rental company. Drivers under 21 years old (who hold a full driver's license) or over 70 years old may be subject to additional fees or stricter rules imposed by rental companies. Be informed about these conditions to avoid the risk of having your booking denied at the time of vehicle pick-up.
2.3.2 Driver's License: The renter and any additional drivers must present a valid original driver's license for the entire rental period, in their name, containing the CPF. The acceptance of the Digital Driver's License depends exclusively on the rental company and, when accepted, must be accessed directly through the official app. Screenshots, photos, or copies will not be accepted. It is highly recommended to present the document in physical format.
2.3.2.1 If you are not Brazilian, you must present your International Driver's License, your national driver's license, and your original passport, issued by your country of origin and valid for the entire booking period.
2.3.3 Credit Card: The primary driver must present a physical credit card in their name, issued by a banking institution, with the name printed on it. This card must have a sufficient limit to cover the security deposit, which will be blocked for the duration of your booking. Any additional fees, extra services, and/or additional costs may be charged directly to this card by the rental company. Rental companies do not accept prepaid, virtual, or contactless cards. We recommend checking with the rental company in advance regarding the accepted credit card brands to ensure compliance with the required policies. If you are not Brazilian, the credit card must be international.
2.3.4 Other documents may be required. Please check the rental company's policies.
2.4 Requirements for Vehicle Rental Abroad:
2.4.1 Minimum Age for Renters and/or Additional Drivers: 25 years old. Drivers under 25 years old or over 70 years old may be subject to additional fees or stricter rules. We recommend checking this information in advance to avoid the risk of having your booking denied at the time of vehicle pick-up.
2.4.2 Driver's License: The renter and any additional drivers must present an original and valid driver's license for the entire rental period, issued at least two years before. The acceptance of the Digital Driver's License is not valid abroad.
2.4.2.1 If you are not Brazilian, you must present your International Driver's License and your national driver's license. If the vehicle is picked up in a country different from the one where the license was issued, a passport may also be required.
2.4.3 International Driving Permit (IDP): For international rentals, we strongly recommend obtaining an IDP before the booking period and presenting it at the time of vehicle pick-up, especially in countries such as Italy and destinations where the alphabet is different from the Latin alphabet, such as Greece, the Czech Republic, the Middle East, Asia, among others. Failure to obtain an IDP is solely your responsibility, and we are not liable if the rental company refuses to release the vehicle or if you incur traffic violations. If the rental company allows the rental without presenting an IDP, it may apply additional fees due to this flexibility.
2.4.4 International Credit Card: For international bookings, an international credit card is required. The primary driver must present a physical international credit card in their name, issued by a banking institution, with the name printed on it. This card must have a sufficient limit to cover the security deposit, which will be blocked for the duration of the booking. Any additional fees, extra services, and/or additional costs may be charged directly to this card by the rental company. Rental companies do not accept prepaid, virtual, or contactless cards. Some rental companies may not accept credit cards issued by digital banks. We recommend checking with the rental company regarding the accepted credit card brands to ensure compliance with the required policies.
2.4.5 Original Passport: Regardless of nationality, many countries require the presentation of the original passport, issued by your country of origin, and valid for the entire booking period. Always have it with you.
3. SIGNING THE RENTAL AGREEMENT3.1 Signing the rental agreement with the rental company: Due to the requirements of some rental companies, in addition to these terms and conditions, you may be required to sign a rental agreement at the time of vehicle pick-up. All terms and conditions stated in this document will apply to your booking.
3.2 Rental Agreement: The rental agreement will likely be written in the local language of the destination. Make sure you understand its content, as claiming ignorance will not invalidate the agreements signed at the rental counter. Some rental companies may offer the contract in other languages, so it is always worth asking.
4. DENIAL OF RENTAL AGREEMENT OPENING BY THE RENTAL COMPANY4.1 Failure to comply with the rules listed above, partial or incorrect compliance, failure to present the required documents, or the absence of necessary information that may prevent vehicle pick-up is your sole responsibility.
4.2 Ride-hailing drivers and/or private chauffeur services: Renting vehicles through our platform for ride-hailing or private chauffeur services is prohibited. If you need to rent a vehicle for any of these services, we recommend seeking specialized companies. The rental company may refuse to open your rental agreement, and neither the rental company nor Rentcars will be responsible for any losses resulting from this refusal.
4.3 Substance use: Driving under the influence of any substances that may impair your motor skills is prohibited. Rental companies may refuse to complete the rental process if they observe that the renter or driver is unfit to drive.
4.3.1 This may occur if the driver appears to be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair their motor skills, or if they are psychologically or physically unfit to operate the vehicle, exhibiting aggressive and/or harmful behavior.
4.4 Rental company assessment: Before and/or at the time of vehicle pick-up, the rental company may refuse to proceed with the rental process if it determines that there is any risk in completing your booking, based on its own internal criteria.
4.4.1 This may occur due to credit restrictions with protection agencies or other assessments conducted by the rental company based on factors deemed risky.
4.4.2 These assessments are conducted exclusively by the rental company before and/or at the time of vehicle pick-up, and Rentcars has no control or involvement in these procedures, which are the exclusive responsibility of each rental company.
4.4.3 In the event of a denial, leading to a Turn-down (Rental Denial), you may be charged certain fees, as outlined in item 10 of these Terms, depending on the policy of each rental company.
5. BOOKING MODIFICATION5.1 It is possible that either the rental company or we may need to modify some details of your booking. In such cases, we will contact you as soon as possible and seek an appropriate solution for you.
5.2 If you need to modify your booking, you can contact us through our service channels via chat on our website, app, or phone. We are always available to assist you, clarify any questions, and help with the necessary modifications. Please note that it is not possible to change the booking holder after confirmation.
5.3 Any modifications, optional items, extras, incurred expenses, infractions, additional service fees, upgrades, among others, contracted at the rental counter, must be paid directly to the rental company or deducted from the security deposit provided as a guarantee, as explained in item 14 of these Terms.
5.4 To modify your booking with Rentcars:
5.4.1 Before the vehicle pick-up date: Changes may be requested through any of Rentcars' channels (chat, phone, website, or app), and we will assist with the modification. Changes are subject to a new availability assessment by the rental company, updated pricing, and a different exchange rate, which may result in additional charges.
5.4.2 At the rental counter: If changes are requested at the time of vehicle pick-up, any additional charges will be applied directly by the rental company. It is possible that the amounts charged at the counter will be higher than those initially contracted or offered by Rentcars at the time of booking due to rate variations, over which Rentcars has no control.
6. BOOKING CANCELLATION6.1 Booking cancellations can be requested through any Rentcars channel (phone, website, or app). Be aware of the specific rules and fees that may apply to your case, as detailed in these Terms.
6.2 When the cancellation is requested by the customer before the scheduled vehicle pick-up time, Rentcars may, before issuing a refund and when permitted by law, retain 20% of the total booking amount.
6.3 Rental Company Retention Fees: In addition to the fee mentioned in item 6.2 of these Terms, rental companies may charge their own retention fees.
6.3.1 If the rental company applies a retention fee, only the higher fee will be charged, whether it is the rental company's fee or the one stated in item 6.2 of these Terms.
6.4 The refund of the remaining amount (after deducting applicable fees) will be processed as detailed in item 11 of these Terms.
6.5 After the cancellation request, the booking cannot be reactivated or used.
7. MULTIPLE BOOKINGS FOR THE SAME PERIOD7.1 Some rental companies do not allow more than one booking for the same period under the same renter's name. If you need to make more than one booking under the same renter's name, contact us so we can assist you. Rentcars is not responsible for automatic cancellations made by the rental company.
8. DELAYS IN VEHICLE PICK-UP OR RETURN8.1 The rental period begins and ends according to the dates and times indicated on your Voucher.
8.2 Pick-up on a different date or time than scheduled for the start of the booking and/or return on a different date or time than indicated on the Voucher does not guarantee vehicle availability, booking maintenance, or refund for unused periods.
8.2.1 Grace period for delayed vehicle pick-up: some rental companies offer a grace period for delayed vehicle pick-up after the time indicated on the Voucher. Check the conditions:
8.2.1.1 Rental companies in Brazil: the booking is guaranteed for up to 59 minutes after the pick-up time or until the rental company's closing time, whichever comes first. Check the Voucher and the rental company's operating hours.
8.2.1.2 Rental companies outside Brazil: the booking is guaranteed for up to 29 minutes after the pick-up time or until the rental company's closing time, whichever comes first. Check the Voucher and the rental company's operating hours.
8.2.1.3 Important: some rental companies do not offer a grace period for delays. In these cases, your booking will be automatically canceled, and the delay will be considered a "no-show", which may result in additional charges as detailed in item 9 of these Terms.
8.2.2 Grace period for return delays: returning the vehicle later than the time specified on the Voucher may result in additional charges by the rental company.
8.3 Regardless of the reason or nature of the delay (flight delay, flight replacement due to overbooking, etc.), it is essential that you notify the rental company at the pick-up location as soon as you become aware of the delay. If you have any difficulties, we are here to help. Contact us immediately so we can inform the rental company and try to prevent the automatic cancellation of your booking.
8.4 Rentcars will not be responsible for any modifications, early returns, or delays on your part.
9. NO-SHOW9.1 A No-Show occurs when you do not appear at the rental counter at the scheduled date and time (or do not cancel within the stipulated deadline), or when you arrive at the counter after the grace period, regardless of the reason.
9.2 In the event of a No-Show, Rentcars may apply a charge corresponding to 20% of the total booking amount.
9.2.1 In addition to this penalty, some rental companies have their own fees that may be applied in case of a No-Show. In this case, only the higher fee will be charged, between the rental company's fee and the fee indicated in item 9.2 of these Terms.
10. TURN-DOWN (RENTAL DENIAL)10.1 A Turn-Down is the rental company's denial to open the rental agreement and occurs when you do not meet all the requirements demanded by the rental company for the effective vehicle pick-up. Before making a booking, it is important to know the rental company's internal rules, available on their website and in their terms and conditions.
10.2 In these situations, the vehicle will not be made available, and your booking will be canceled, which may result in a charge corresponding to 20% of the total booking amount.
10.2.1 Some rental companies have their own fees that may be applied in case of rental denial. In this case, only the higher fee will be charged between the rental company's fee and the fee indicated in item 10.2 of these Terms.
11. REFUNDS11.1 Rentcars will only process refunds or reimbursements in cases where the booking payment was made directly to us (through Pre-Payment mode) through our sales channels. If the payment was made directly to the rental company (Pay at Destination/Pick-up mode), the refund or reimbursement must be handled directly with the rental company, although our team is available to assist you in this process.
11.2 The processing time for refunds by Rentcars is up to 5 calendar days.
11.2.1 Refund requests for bookings with "Turn Down" or "No-show" will only begin processing after Rentcars confirms with the rental company the booking status and its non-usage. We emphasize that bookings with this type of refund may be subject to value retention by both the rental company and Rentcars.
11.2.2 In case of pre-payment made by credit card and/or digital wallets, the refund will be credited in subsequent statements, according to each credit card operator's policies.
11.2.3 For pre-payments made through other payment methods regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil (such as PIX), the refund will be processed to the booking holder's bank account.
11.2.4 For refunds to international bank accounts (outside Brazil), the processing time may extend up to 14 calendar days.
12. CHARGEBACK12.1 Payment disputes or Chargebacks with your bank and/or credit card provider prevent Rentcars from processing the refund (as the amount has been blocked by the card administrator). Furthermore, these actions may result in the inability to make new bookings through our channels. To avoid these inconveniences, we recommend contacting us before taking any action, so we can help you resolve the situation appropriately.
13. SECURITY DEPOSIT (Security Guarantee Amount)13.1 Some rental companies require a security deposit as a guarantee to cover potential damages or additional costs during your booking. This amount may be retained (in whole or in part) by the rental company in case of vehicle damage, traffic violations, extra expenses, counter services, among other situations.
13.1.1 The exact deposit amount may vary according to different factors. To know the exact amount that may be blocked, we recommend consulting directly with the rental company. Our team can also assist you with this inquiry.
13.1.2 Some of the extra expenses that may be charged (not described in our Voucher) include: traffic fines, uncovered vehicle damage or repairs, cleaning fee, fuel, toll fees, optional protections, services and accessories contracted at the rental counter, among others.
13.2 To secure the deposit, you must present a valid credit card in the name of the booking holder, physical version (digital cards, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay may be refused by the rental company), with the printed name and surname and linked to a banking institution, with sufficient available credit limit. For rentals outside your country of residence, the credit card must be international.
13.3 The deposit amount will be blocked on your credit card at the time of vehicle pick-up. The release of the amount will be requested by the rental company after returning the car, when it is verified that the booking proceeded regularly and in accordance with what was contracted.
13.4 The timeframe for the amount to be released on your statement may vary, taking up to 30 days depending on your card administrator. If, after this period, the amount remains blocked, contact the pick-up location or your bank.
13.5 For Brazilian clients, in bookings with pick-up abroad, it is worth noting that, as this is a financial operation, the IOF (Tax on Financial Operations) may be retained, and this amount will not be refunded according to Brazilian tax regulations.
13.6 Rentcars has no interference in the security deposit blocking process, nor any access to information regarding this with your card administrator. We can only assist you by mediating your contact with the rental company in these cases, with no obligation or responsibility on our part.
14. AUTHORIZED CHARGES BY THE RENTAL COMPANY14.1 The rental company may charge other additional expenses (not described in the Voucher) to your credit card. These charges may be made through the retention of the security deposit (as detailed in item 13 of these Terms) or directly at the time of vehicle return.
14.1.1 Examples of these additional expenses include, but are not limited to: charges and amounts established by government regulation, such as airport fees, insurance coverage, VAT (value-added tax), sales tax, or any other charge/tax/amount that is outside the control of the rental company and Rentcars.
15. RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION (Drop-off Fee or One Way Fee)15.1 Some rental companies offer the possibility of returning the vehicle to a location different from the pick-up location, subject to a specific fee. We recommend that you inquire in advance with the rental company about the available locations for this option and about the fee charged. The payment of this fee must be made directly to the rental company.
15.2 The return of the vehicle to a location different from the pick-up location must be explicitly stated in the rental agreement so that returning to a different location does not constitute a "contract breach" and result in additional charges by the rental company.
16. FUEL AND REFUELING16.1 If you have not contracted the refueling waiver (at the time of booking or requested at the rental counter), you must return the vehicle with the fuel tank in the same condition as it was delivered (usually full).
16.2 If the vehicle is not refueled, the rental company may charge a proportional fee, based on their price list, which may be higher than the price at local gas stations. We recommend keeping the refueling receipt made immediately before returning the vehicle to facilitate your defense in case of any charges you consider improper.
16.3 If the rented vehicle is hybrid or electric, check the rental company's charging rules.
17. CROSSING BORDERS17.1 Crossing borders between states or countries: may be prohibited by some rental companies depending on the location, or may incur additional fees that may be deducted from your security deposit or charged later by the rental company. Confirm your itinerary with the rental company in advance and ask about any fees that may be charged in these cases.
18. TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS18.1 In case of traffic violations: the payment and civil and criminal liability regarding fines will be exclusively the responsibility of the booking holder, with the country's traffic authority. The rental company may reserve the right to mediate and/or advance payments, to later charge them directly to you, along with the rental company's administrative fees.
19. SMOKING19.1 Smoking cigarettes, cigars, or similar items inside the vehicles is strictly prohibited. The fines applied for this violation vary according to the rental company and can be consulted directly at the service counter. The charge will be made exclusively by the rental company, as described in item 14 of these Terms.
20. REFUNDS DUE BY THE RENTAL COMPANY20.1 Any refunds due to you by the rental company must be handled directly with the rental company. Rentcars has no responsibility or involvement in this process.
21. VEHICLE CATEGORIES21.1 Vehicles are booked by category, and there are no guarantees regarding the brand, year, model, color, license plate or other specific vehicle configurations.
21.2 Upgrade offer: it is common for the rental company to offer a category upgrade at the time of vehicle pick-up with an additional cost, which must be paid directly to the rental company.
21.3 Luggage capacity: the luggage capacity is merely indicative and may be reduced or non-existent according to the balance between the number of vehicle occupants and the luggage to be transported.
21.3.1 Rentcars will not be responsible for non-fulfillment of the booking or additional charges for category changes in cases where the number of passengers and/or luggage exceeds the capacity of the booked vehicle.
22. VEHICLE UNAVAILABILITY22.1 As we have no control over the availability of vehicles offered by rental companies, we cannot be held responsible for any failure of the rental company to fulfill their obligations. If you encounter difficulties in opening the rental agreement or picking up the vehicle, contact us so we can assist you.
23. VEHICLE INSPECTION23.1 When picking up the vehicle, check the documentation and the presence of safety accessories, such as tires, spare tire, jack, wheel wrench, warning triangle, and fuel tank level.
23.2 If possible, accompany the vehicle inspection both at pick-up and return. Check, point out, and record in the checklist the conditions of cleanliness, hygiene, maintenance, damages, and/or existing defects in the rented vehicle.
23.3 The rental company may charge for repairs of damages caused during your rental period, as well as cleaning and sanitization fees, based on their own price list, in addition to other administrative fees related to any damages and/or defects found.
23.4 Rentcars has no involvement in the verification and charging of damages and/or defects, nor any access to information regarding this from the rental company. We can only assist you by mediating your contact with the rental company in these cases, with no obligation or responsibility on our part.
24. ACCIDENTS24.1 In case of accident, theft, or damage to the rented vehicle, immediately notify the rental company to receive information on how to proceed. Generally, it is necessary to file a Police Report in the country where the event occurred, as well as complete the accident report form with the rental company within 24 hours.
24.2 Regardless of whether the accident fault is attributed to you or a third party, be aware that any damage and/or defect sustained by the vehicle (or its deductible) will be charged by the rental company directly to you.
25. MANDATORY PROTECTION25.1 We always include mandatory protection in the bookings you make with us. Thus, you will always have Risk Coverage and Mandatory Protection included. For this, you will be subject to the clauses present in the rental company's rental agreement. As a general rule, the coverage excludes, among others, the following items: accessories, damaged tire, damaged wheel, suspension damaged due to potholes or curbs, windshield cracks, damage caused by floods or any other natural phenomenon, loss or damage to the vehicle key and/or documentation. Such items may vary among rental companies and should be confirmed at the time of vehicle pick-up. Carefully check the details of the protection and coverage available in your booking.
25.2 If you are interested in purchasing additional protection or if you disagree with the conditions presented, contact us for assistance.
25.3 Rentcars is not responsible for the loss of vehicle protection resulting from it being driven by unauthorized persons, under the influence of alcohol/drugs, or in violation of current traffic laws.
25.4 Co-payment and/or deductible values: when applied, co-payment and/or deductible values and fees will be determined in the rental agreement and, in case of damage or harm caused to the vehicle, the charge will be made directly by the rental company to you, as per item 14 of these Terms. In addition to such costs, the rental company may also charge for the period the vehicle was out of service for maintenance. Make sure to verify such charges at the time of opening the rental agreement.
25.5 U.S. Residents with Bookings for Use Within the United States: if you are a U.S. resident and make a booking for use within the United States, you may make bookings without purchasing mandatory protection. In these cases, the rental company will verify, at the time of vehicle pick-up, if you have other forms of protection (such as personal insurance, insurance benefits from banking institutions, among others). However, it is possible that the rental company, by its own criteria, may not accept your other form of protection and may thus deny your booking.
26. SURPRISE OFFER26.1 In our channels, you can find Surprise Offers. These offers are special conditions offered by Rentcars in partnership with rental companies, with promotional rates, but without revealing the name of the rental company responsible for the booking until the booking is confirmed.
26.2 When choosing a Surprise Offer, be aware that the name of the rental company responsible for your booking will only be informed after payment confirmation and Voucher issuance.
26.3 When contracting a Surprise Offer, you will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of both Rentcars and the rental company responsible for the booking.
26.4 Modification or cancellation of Surprise Offer booking: The conditions for modification and cancellation, as described in items 5 and 6 of these Terms, remain unchanged. In other words, you may modify or cancel your booking and even obtain a refund of the amount paid, but retention fees may apply, according to the Terms and Conditions of Rentcars and the rental company. The rental company's retention policies and other fees will be clearly informed in the "Included in Booking" and "Booking Summary" fields during the Surprise Offer booking process.
26.5 If you cancel your Surprise Offer booking for any reason, it will not be possible to demand that the rental company maintain the offered price, as these values are exclusive to the Surprise Offer mode.
26.6 Payment conditions: Surprise Offers are exclusively for advance payment and must be paid through the following options: credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal, or Pix.
26.7 Coupons: Before applying discount coupons, check the specific conditions for using them with Surprise Offers.
26.8 Cashback and Rental Cover: The conditions for obtaining Cashback (https://www.rentcars.com/en/cashback) and purchasing Rental Cover remain the same and are not altered by Surprise Offers.
